How to add text to a GIF

  1. Load your GIF. Drop it on the page, paste it, or choose a file. A still image works too and becomes a looping GIF.
  2. Type your caption. Pick a font, colors and an outline. Drag the words on the preview to place them.
  3. Choose when it shows. Drag the blue handles on the frame timeline, or type exact start and end frames. Add more captions for different moments.
  4. Animate it (optional). Choose Typewriter, Fade in, Slide in, Pop in or Scrolling. The effect plays across the caption's frame range.
  5. Create and download. Pick an output width to control file size, then press Create GIF.

Animated text effects

Every caption can stay still or move. The effect plays across the frames you choose on the timeline.

Typing text GIF (typewriter effect)

Letters appear one at a time with a blinking cursor, as if someone is typing the message live.

Scrolling text GIF (marquee)

A line of text travels across the frame from right to left, like a news ticker or a stadium sign.

Slide-in, pop-in and fade-in text

Bring a caption in from the side, pop it up with a little bounce, or fade it in softly for a subtitle.

Add captions to a GIF

Turn on a dark or white background box to make subtitle-style captions that stay readable on any scene. Add a caption for each moment, then drag its handles on the timeline so each line appears exactly when it should.

Use it as a GIF text generator

No GIF to start from? Choose Blank canvas above the preview to get a transparent frame, type your words and pick an effect. You get a text-only animated GIF with a see-through background, ready to drop on top of a video, a story or a chat. A still photo works too: it becomes a looping GIF with moving text.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Adding text to GIFs is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. The GIF is split into frames, captioned and rebuilt inside your browser. The file never leaves your device.

Can I put different text on different frames?

Yes. Add a caption for each moment and drag its handles on the frame timeline, or type the start and end frame numbers.

How do I make the text move?

Choose an animation for the caption. Typewriter, Fade in, Slide in and Pop in play from the caption's first frame; Scrolling moves the text across the whole range.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but very long or very large GIFs need more memory. Large GIFs are scaled to 800 pixels wide for editing. Pick a smaller output width to make the final file lighter, for example for Discord or email.

Will the quality change?

The GIF is re-encoded with up to 256 colors per frame, the same limit every GIF has. Colors stay close to the original; the file size may go up or down.

Can I make a GIF with only text?

Yes. Choose Blank canvas, type your text and pick an effect. The result is an animated text GIF with a transparent background.

How do I add subtitle-style captions?

Set Background box to Dark box or White box, place the caption near the bottom, and set its frames on the timeline. Add another caption for each new line.
